Another neighbor, William Cunningham, was moved to tears as he sat on his porch. He said he is a veteran of Operation Desert Storm but never expected such violence in his own neighborhood. Many roads in the area including Interstate 77 were closed so ambulances could get to hospitals faster. TV footage showed ambulances speeding to hospitals escorted by vehicles both in front and behind with their sirens wailing.

The noisiest cicadas were moving around the county of about 38,000 people, about 40 miles northwest of Columbia, prompting calls from different locations as Tuesday wore on, Foster said. Billions in aid to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan — along with a bill to force TikTok's Chinese parent company to sell off the popular app — are headed to President Joe Biden's desk after months of delay. Trillions of red-eyed periodical cicadas are emerging from underground in the eastern US this month, including the rare convergence of two periodical broods that stay underground for either 13 years or 17 years. A South Carolina sheriff’s department has been swarmed with 911 calls about incessant siren sounds — only to find out that the concerned citizens are complaining about cicadas. This will be the first time since 1803 that two broods emerged simultaneously.

The department’s final rule, which will go into effect on July 1, 2024, will increase the standard salary level that helps define and delimit which salaried workers are entitled to overtime pay protections under the FLSA. We are committed to providing quality healthcare access for all patients with our proactive approach to wellness. We provide pharmacy, palliative care, diabetic care, cardiac care, diabetic care, and cardiac care. We have psych and psychotherapy, dietician, and a pain management program. One of the basic principles of the American workplace is that a hard day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay. A cornerstone of that promise is the Fair Labor Standards Act’s (FLSA) requirement that when most workers work more than 40 hours in a week, they get paid more. The Department of Labor’s new overtime regulation is restoring and extending this promise for millions more lower-paid salaried workers in the U.S.

House Calls offers healthcare services that bring the convenience of a traditional doctor's office visit directly to the comfort of the patient's home. Patients have the flexibility to choose between in-person visits, at home, in a clinic, or wherever they reside. Proactive healthcare, to me, means being a step ahead and thinking outside of the box. Being proactive, rather than reactive, can make a significant difference. Many patients lack sufficient access to healthcare and often wait until they become severely ill before seeking medical attention, resulting in emergency room visits and hospital admissions.

Missouri House OKs initiative petition bill including 'ballot candy'

the candy house

Within a decade, Bix’s new technology, “Own Your Unconscious”—that allows you access to every memory you’ve ever had, and to share every memory in exchange for access to the memories of others—has seduced multitudes. House Democrats spoke out against the decision to add the so-called ballot candy back onto the resolution both on the floor and after the vote. At $165 million, it’s currently the third-priciest home on the market in L.A. County behind the aforementioned 105,000-square-foot home in Bel-Air listed for $295 million, which is heading to foreclosure auction, and an unfinished 75,000-square-foot spec house being developed by Mohamed Hadid, who’s shopping it around for $250 million. In 2019, the Manor pushed Southern California’s luxury real estate market to new heights when it sold for $119.75 million. Nothing is a better beach tradition than enjoy salt water taffy on a pier and Carousel Candies has been providing Monterey’s Fisherman’s Wharf with salt water taffy for close to 50 years.

MO House sends initiative petition bill back to Senate with ‘ballot candy’ reinstated

The move from Republicans to make it harder to amend the constitution is related to the push for abortion to be on the ballot. Democratic senators have said they think voters will defeat the measure if it’s straightforward. U.S. citizenship is already a requirement for people to vote in Missouri, and federal law prohibits spending by foreign entities in any election. She recalled the end of session last year, when House Speaker Dean Plocher, a Republican from Des Peres, said his party expected an attempt to legalize abortion would land on the ballot and pass.

This gigantic candy store began as a simple cart in the 1930s, and is now one of the largest (and cheapest) spots to satisfy your sweet tooth in L.A. The wholesale prices here are outrageous—you can stock up here for Halloween, birthday piñata stuffing, presents, party favors or just a cheap sweet treat. Jack's has everything, and displays it all in giant quantities, so you'll be shopping among flats and flats of candy.

You’ll find vintage candy brands from days of yore as well as bulk candy in well-appointed old school candy jars. The Candy Store also offers creative gifts and custom favors for special events. The Sacramento Sweets Company in Old Sacramento is a family owned business that takes pride in being the second oldest business in town under a single ownership. Chief candy maker keeps classic favorites like brittles and candy apples along with soft serve ice cream that goes beyond the usual vanilla.

The Irish Times, by Helen Cullen, 4/30/22

The chapter contains such observations as, “The fact that you feel like you’re dying doesn’t mean that you will die,” which reassured me during some particularly frustrating sections of this book. The music that ran through “Goon Squad” and gave the novel its melody is far harder to hear in these new chapters. Also, 12 years later, readers are less likely to be awed by literary experimentation.

Carousel Candies, Monterey, CA

Following a tangle of characters in and adjacent to the music business across decades, it switched voices and techniques in a kaleidoscopic extended-family portrait. Jennifer Egan’s ambitious new novel — a sequel, of sorts, to 2010’s “A Visit From the Goon Squad” — riffs on memory, authenticity and the allure of new technology. “I think our constitution is a very important document, much like the federal constitution. I think the voters should be informed, and I don't think it should be amended willy-nilly,” Plocher said.

KOCO Oklahoma City

“The Candy House” is a critique not only of rapidly changing technology, but also of the culture that inevitably arises as we get accustomed to technology’s advancements. This is, after all, a sequel to “A Visit From the Goon Squad,” Egan’s astonishing demonstration of literary bravado that swung through 2010, grabbing a Pulitzer Prize, a Los Angeles Times Book Prize and a National Book Critics Circle Award. The Washington Post named “Goon Squad” one of the best books of 2010, and, later, other publications called it one of the greatest novels of the decade. “The Candy House” is a sequel to “A Visit From the Goon Squad,” Egan’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 2010 novel. That book tells more than a dozen interrelated stories and absolutely defies neat summarizing.

“The Candy House,” which passes the microphone to a number of peripheral “Goon Squad” characters, is similar in its anti-chronological structure and chameleonic virtuosity. But given its subject matter, it might be better to describe it as a social network, the literary version of the collaborative novel written by your friends and friends of friends on Facebook or Instagram, each link opening on a new protagonist. If the resolution were to pass both chambers, it still would need approval from Missouri voters to go into effect. The main champions of the legislation seeking to change the initiative petition process have been anti-abortion groups. An analysis by The Independent found that under the concurrent majority standard being proposed, as few as 23% of voters could defeat a ballot measure.

That’s the last time we see much of Bix, which is a shame, because he’s a singularly fascinating character. Making him a Black man was an interesting element of “Goon Squad,” but it’s one that Egan seems uninterested in pursuing. What, after all, might America be like if our all-pervasive social media were shaped by the dreams of an African American?

The home’s ample living and entertaining space includes a family kitchen and dining room, a formal dining and wine room, and two living spaces including a bar and lounge. The phrase "the candy house" (as in Hansel and Gretel) refers to the (also deeply familiar) Faustian bargain of convenience and connection for loss of privacy. These additions have been called ballot candy – aimed at making the resolution more appealing to some voters. Whether the Missouri legislature will pass a resolution asking voters to make it harder to amend the state constitution is again up to the Senate. According to a news release, investigators believe the deceased suspect, 42-year-old Jonathon Candy, shot and killed his wife and three of his children before turning the gun on himself. The 10-year-old child who called 911 was unharmed and later placed with relatives.

The Jelly Belly Candy Store offers a boatload of the favorite candies as well as tours that showcase the production process. So often her characters are unable to understand or accept what happened, those crucial, ill-understood moments when everything went awry. Far from being cartoonishly evil, an obvious wrong, "Own Your Unconscious" has deep instinctive appeal. This is characteristic of Egan, who isn't interested in moral problems with obvious answers.

On Thursday, state Rep. Maggie Nurrenbern, a Democrat from Kansas City, brought the conversation back to abortion. The issue has been an undercurrent in this year’s initiative petition debate. State Rep. Peter Merideth, a Democrat from St. Louis, said under the current framework of one person one vote, Gragg was flat-out wrong. After an hour-long debate Thursday morning, the bill ultimately passed, with House Majority Leader Jon Patterson of Lee’s Summit the lone “no” vote among his Republican colleagues.

Dwight Garner, The New York Times, 3/30/21

Much of “The Candy House” takes place in a future influenced by Bix’s revolution, but the novel rarely contends with the implications of that premise for Bix’s life, the tech industry or the world shaped by it. Instead, Bix’s skin color remains about as relevant as his hair color. In The Candy House, there is a persistent, lovely countermelody to the corporate project of mapping human experience and using it to predict what people will think and buy. The novel is full of people engaged in a kind of sweeter and more plaintive human algebra. I haven't recently read a gentler or funnier description of longing than in one chapter here in which a "senior empiricist and metrics expert" named Lincoln tries to determine what will make his crush, "M", fall in love with him.

To find festive candy and nostaglic-retro sweets like Abba-Zaba, Big Cherry and Good News bars, and even Scandinavian treats, head to these top candy shops. Currently, a simple majority of votes is needed to pass a proposed constitutional amendment once it makes it onto the ballot. The proposed resolution would increase that threshold to both a simple majority of votes and the majority of Missouri’s eight congressional districts. Dylan Lauren's super candy store in New York landed on the West Coast at the Original Farmers Market.

Aaron and Candy Spelling's 56,500-square-foot (5,250 m2) mansion in Holmby Hills. The French chateau, under construction now for two years, has turned the corner of Mapleton and Club View drives into a gawker's paradise. Sprawled across 6 acres (2.4 ha) on what once was the Bing Crosby estate, the house dwarfs the sizable mansions on the block and looms large over tranquil Holmby Park near Wilshire Boulevard. In 2016, she decided to sell the property, and it was on and off the market for three years. The 11,000-square-foot main residence is laid out on a single story and designed for indoor-outdoor living, with 14-foot ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, and numerous glass doors opening out onto the home’s terraces, according to listing photos.

Book Reviews

House Republicans want language in the resolution they think will make it more likely to pass. “Surely the ratification of something as sacred as the framework to our governance as a state should require something greater than just simply a simple majority statewide,” said state Rep. Brad Banderman, a Republican from St. Clair. Republicans argued this is about engaging all voters, no matter if they live in an urban or rural area. We are shocked, and our hearts are broken; this tragedy simply defies understanding. While this has been a very difficult year for the MPS Family, both students and adults may struggle with managing their feelings and reactions to this news. Our Crisis Response Team has been present at schools today and will continue to be in place moving forward for as long as they are needed.

Other highlights include a swimming pool, spa and tennis court. Ghirardelli’s shiny chocolate squares are found next to many cash registers these days, but the original Ghirardelli is best enjoyed in San Francisco’s Ghirardelli Square. The ambience resembles an old-fashioned ice cream parlor, while the long lines are more like Disneyland.

High Resolution Images

the candy house

This is an author endlessly capable of experimentation (Egan shocked readers in 2010 with a chapter written as a PowerPoint presentation, quaint as it might sound now). But ending on something so straightforwardly conventional — so formulaic — feels not like a copout but rather like a winking flex, a master pianist infusing unexpected feeling into Chopsticks. It is moving, somehow, both despite and because of its familiarity.

More From the Los Angeles Times

“This may be a regret the Republicans will have because people are going to be angry, and when you're angry you vote,” Baringer said. Louis, said she thinks voters are going to show up in droves. House Minority Leader Crystal Quade, D-Springfield, said with the changes, there is a possibility that the resolution does not pass. The proposed amendment passed after hours of filibustering from Senate Democrats who wanted other language that was originally in the resolution stripped off. When the Senate initially sent over its resolution, it contained only the provision that raises the required votes needed.

Partly, this is simply a matter of the book’s structure, which insists on constantly fracturing and abandoning its forms, themes and characters. But as other chapters leap to other lives, we see people who do resist the Web’s mind-absorbing candy. Alfred Hollander, for instance, is so desperate for authenticity that he randomly screams just to discombobulate passing strangers for a moment. Citizen-led initiative petitions currently require signatures from 8% of voters in five of the state’s eight congressional districts.

Now kids, tourists and sugar fiends can all stock up on all things sweet and colored at this Mid-City candy mecca. Browse the shelves stocked full of nostalgic and holiday-themed candies, along with fill-your-own-bag bins of chocolates, gummies, crèmes and hard candies. Should you get sick of candy (like that could ever happen), this shop also slings ice cream by the cup or the cone.

Save the sugary treats for dessert and show up for the wholesome lunch menu of sandwiches, salads, quiche and the ever-popular dal bowl—almost as good as the homemade confections you'll treat yourself to afterward. Egan uses the destruction of familial relationships to portray the unsavory role technology can play. “Own Your Unconscious” is painted in a decidedly negative light as it creates ideological rifts between father and son and drives a mother to the extremes of paranoia.

Numerous shelves are stocked nearly floor to ceiling, warehouse style with chocolate bars and chocolate accessories from around the world so that you can find the perfect treat. Mr. Candy’s brother, Christian Candy, purchased the property for $24 million in 2013, according to representatives for Candy Capital, and in 2018 sold the estate to Mr. Candy, who has since made extensive updates, including the addition of the guest home. A 1,000-square-foot primary wing includes dual en-suite bathrooms and dressing rooms. Other amenities in the home include a 1920s “French regency-style” home theater as well as a study, and a playroom. Find handmade marshmallows and sea salt caramels at this sweet, homey café, whose neat blue-and-white striped exterior is slightly reminiscent of a candy wrapper.

Gift baskets, or shalach manos, a traditional gift most often given during the Jewish holiday Purim, are also offered at this Kosher candy store—as are a range of sugar-free options. The killer app that defines the alternative reality of “The Candy House” is dreamed up in 2010 by Bix Bouton, briefly introduced as an early-90s internet obsessive in “Goon Squad,” now a social-media mogul. The initiative petition process has been used in prior elections to pass constitutional amendments like Medicaid expansion and legalizing recreational marijuana. One of those provisions stated that only legal residents of Missouri and U.S. citizens would be able to vote on constitutional amendments. Another would bar foreign interference with the initiative petition process. Satisfy your sweet tooth with hard-to-find treats and new sugary finds at the best candy store options in the city.

Our team of industry professionals and innovative thought leaders is dedicated to improving and supporting the communities we serve. We take your planned investment amount seriously and are devoted to honoring your specified guidelines. Diamond painting is a relatively new and immensely fun craft that requires you to take tiny square or round shaped, flat backed rhinestones and place them onto a sticky template to create a stunning, ultra sparkly 5D image. Diamond painting therefore does not have anything to do with actual painting; it is thought to be more of a modern combination of cross stitch, paint by numbers and mosaics.

There are many challenges of updating your home which you may find overwhelming. Simplifying the process for you, while creating more functional and beautiful space, is what we do every day. The Cider House Rules movie review 1999

cider house rules

The Cider House Rules was adapted as a film in 1999, with a screenplay by Irving. Directed by Lasse Hallström, it starred Michael Caine as Dr. Larch and a young Tobey Maguire as Homer Wells. The film, with Dr. Larch’s loving nightly valediction to the orphans, “Goodnight, you princes of Maine, you kings of New England,” earned Caine the second Academy Award of his career. The Cider House Rules is a 1999 American drama film directed by Lasse Hallström from a screenplay by John Irving, based on Irving's 1985 novel of the same name.

One day, the Worthington family receives the news that Wally’s plane crashed over Burma, and that Wally is presumed dead. One night in the cider house, where the orchard workers stay and work during picking season, they conceive their son. They keep their relationship and Candy’s pregnancy a secret from Ray and from Wally’s mother, Olive.

However, in Ireland, the film was given the strictest possible rating, 18. If an unauthorized person comes onto your property and does not leave after you tell them to, you can have the police remove that person. In general, any person or thing that comes onto your property without your permission is considered trespassing. However, there are certain exceptions, including valid law enforcement activities, public utilities, etc. If you OWN (not rent) a home or other residential property in California, here’s what you need to know about the law. Many of these laws for property owners focus on the city of Los Angeles (if you aren’t sure if you are in the city of LA, see here), but we are working on expanding to other cities.

Summary and Study Guide

Wally and Candy are both impressed by Homer and his calm demeanor, and Wally asks Homer if he would like to drive back with them to Ocean View. While the visit is meant to be a short one, Dr. Larch and the orphans all understand that Homer will not be returning. Furious at Homer’s departure, Melony runs away from the orphanage to find him.

A list of rules for its occupants is posted in the Cider House, but as the migrant workers are illiterate, they have never known what the rules are. When Homer reads them the list, the workers observe the rules have been made without the occupants' consent by people who do not live there and do not share their problems. Homer and Candy become much closer during harvest and spend more time together while Wally is fighting in Burma. He implies that his daughter knifed him but also insists that his death be called a suicide. After the other harvest workers leave, Homer tells Angel the truth about his parentage; Candy, separately, tells Wally the truth.

She tells Homer that if he can find a record of her mother’s identity in Dr. Larch’s office, she will perform sexual favors for him. Homer is caught snooping by Dr. Larch, who destroys all records of the mothers who drop off their children. Nevertheless, Homer and Melony begin a sexual relationship; Homer is not in love with Melony, but Melony is in love with him. As a baby and a young child, Homer Wells is adopted by several foster families. However, he is always returned to the orphanage and eventually comes to realize that his true home is there. Homer is both calm and a fast learner, and he becomes the unspoken favorite of Dr. Larch.

Homer leaves the orphanage, and returns with them to Wally's family's orchard in Heart's Rock, near the Maine coast. Wally and Homer become best friends and Homer develops a secret love for Candy. Wally goes off to serve in the Second World War and his plane is shot down over Burma. He is declared missing by the military, but Homer and Candy both believe he is dead and move on with their lives, which includes beginning a romantic relationship. When Candy becomes pregnant, they go back to St. Cloud's Orphanage, where their son is born and named Angel. While Wally is away, Candy starts flirting with Homer, and they have an affair.

On the call, he learns that Dr. Larch, who has been addicted to ether all of his life, has died from an ether overdose. He also resolves that he will do what Dr. Larch asked him to do and return to St. Cloud’s as Fuzzy Stone. Wally is back from the war, and he and Candy have married; he has lost the use of his legs and must use a wheelchair. Homer remains at the orchard with the couple and stays in a bedroom of his own; he and Candy have kept up the deception that Angel is adopted, while remaining secret lovers.

Film adaptation

Dr. Larch has given Fuzzy an alternate adult life, including a Harvard medical diploma and a conservative outlook on abortion. However, Homer refuses to go through with this plan; his views on abortion remain unchanged. He is taught how to swim by Candy and her mother Olive and learns lobstering from Candy’s father Ray. He also becomes close to Wally and learns the routines of the apple orchard.

If you want to add any square footage to your house, you almost certainly need to get a permit from the city (or county). Many laws for homeowners are made at the state level, so see our Guide to Laws for Homeowners in California. Homer then returns to St. Cloud’s under a new identity to take up Dr. Larch’s work. As Homer becomes a teenager, he begins to rebel against Dr. Larch’s tutelage. He decides that while he is not against a woman’s right to choose, he does not want to perform abortions. He also becomes entangled with Melony, the only other orphan his age. Melony dislikes life at St. Cloud’s and is angry with her unknown mother for leaving here there.

The Cider House Rules is a Bildungsroman, or a coming-of-age novel; it is set in the 1930s through to the 1950s. Homer lives in an orphanage called St. Cloud’s, in a poor inland valley town of the same name. The town was once a prosperous logging town but now is mostly abandoned. The director of the orphanage—which is also a maternity hospital—is Dr. Wilbur Larch.

Many years later, teenaged Angel falls in love with Rose, the daughter of the head migrant worker at the apple orchard. Homer decides to return to the orphanage after Wilbur's death, to work as the new director. Though he maintains his distaste for abortions, he continues Dr. Larch's legacy of performing the procedure for those in need, and he dreams of the day when abortions are legal.

This movie is featured in the following articles.

The story relates his early life at Larch's orphanage in Maine and follows Homer as he eventually leaves the nest and comes of age. Homer Wells has lived nearly his entire life within the walls of St. Cloud's Orphanage in rural Maine. Though groomed by its proprietor, Dr. Larch, to be his successor, Homer feels the need to strike out on his own and experience the world outside.

While working at an apple orchard, Homer learns some powerfully indelible lessons about life, love, and home. The name "The Cider House Rules" refers to the list of rules that migrant workers are supposed to follow at the Ocean View Orchards. However, none of them can read, and they are completely unaware of the rules – which have been posted for years. After Arthur and his team return to the orchard the following season, Homer discovers that Rose, Arthur's daughter, is pregnant. He then makes the injury worse, and as a last request, asks Homer and another worker to tell the police his death was a suicide. He has taught Homer (Tobey Maguire), his protege, everything he knows about medicine, but Homer is opposed to abortion.

Homer’s path collides with a young coastal couple named Wally Worthington and Candy Kendall. Wally is the wealthy heir to an apple orchard called Ocean View; his girlfriend, Candy, is the daughter of a lobsterman. When Candy finds that she is pregnant, the two travel to St. Cloud’s for an abortion.

Modifying your property or building new structures

A subplot follows the character Melony, who grew up alongside Homer in the orphanage. After Homer leaves the orphanage, so does she in an effort to find him. She eventually becomes an electrician and takes a female lover, Lorna. Melony is stoic, who refuses to press charges against a man who brutally broke her nose and arm.

Michael Caine's performance is one of his best, and Charlize Theron is sweet and direct as the girl. He names the baby Homer Wells and essentially adopts the kid himself, teaching him everything he knows about medicine and grooming him to take over the institution. (If forged papers are necessary, no problem.) Homer, meanwhile, wonders if he might not be allowed to choose his own path in life. The Cider House Rules derives affecting drama from wonderful performances, lovely visuals, and an old-fashioned feel.

Fuzzy suffers from respiratory disease and thus spends most of his time beneath a plastic tent ventilated with a breathing apparatus. Each night before sleeping, Dr. Larch says to children "Good night, you Princes of Maine! You Kings of New England!" as both an encouragement and a kind of blessing. Dr. Wilbur Larch, trained as an obstetrician, is the ether-addicted and childless proprietor of the St. Cloud’s Orphanage in 1920s Maine. After many years witnessing unwanted children and deaths from backstreet abortions, Dr. Larch starts an illegal, and safe, abortion clinic at the orphanage. Homer Wells is one of the orphans, a bright and enterprising boy who appears to be inexplicably unadoptable, being returned again and again to the orphanage from would-be families. Larch realizes Homer will probably spend his life in the orphanage and decides to train him to take over his profession as St. Cloud’s illegal abortionist.

Wishing to keep Homer out of World War II, he invents a minor heart problem for him; he tells Candy and Wally about Homer’s condition but does not tell Homer himself. Melony travels to different orchards all over Maine looking for Homer but fails to find Ocean View. She works briefly at another orchard called York Farms and then hitchhikes to Bath, where she works at a shipyard assembly line. Wally joins the war draft as a fighter pilot; he is sent out to training camps and then to India.

Backward Design Model: Lesson Plans and Examples PLUS: Free Lesson Plan Template

backwards design

For educators looking to align their teaching methods with desired learning outcomes, Backward Design offers a robust, flexible framework. Whether you're teaching in a traditional classroom, a corporate setting, or an online platform, taking the time to plan backward can lead to more effective, engaging, and meaningful learning experiences. Finally, instructors create learning activities and instructional materials that align with and support the achievement of the learning objectives.

Step 1: Identify the Desired Results

We use assessment to determine the “nature and degree of student learning” (Garies & Grant, p. 3, 2015). Notice that a general learning outcome (“tease out the laws of electromagnetism…”) is rather non-specific. A 6-unit, online, self-paced course for K–12 educators seeking to engage students while adhering to standards. It would be easy to blow off this distinction, to say Bah, same difference. The test asks students a lot of questions that would show an understanding of these concepts, so we’re covered. In many classrooms, teachers also have students track the appearance of the moon over the course of a month, so that might be added as well.

In traditional curriculum planning, a list of content that will be taught is created and/or selected.[4] In backward design, the educator starts with goals, creates or plans out assessments and finally makes lesson plans. Supporters of backward design liken the process to using a "road map".[5] In this case, the destination is chosen first and then the road map is used to plan the trip to the desired destination. In contrast, in traditional curriculum planning there is no formal destination identified before the journey begins.

In Corporate Training and Adult Education

Formative assessments can include short quizzes, peer evaluations, discussions, one-on-one student-teacher interviews and student self-reflections. The intention of these progress assessments should be to gauge abilities like critical thinking, inquiry, problem-solving and foundational knowledge as it pertains to the course content. Backward design in a lesson plan means starting with the end objective, such as student-focused learning goals, and designing your assessments and learning materials afterward to ensure your students achieve those objectives. Traditional design lesson plans review standards or learning objectives (which can be federal, national, or personal). When designing lessons, ensure your instructional strategies and course design both emphasize the knowledge and skills your students need to achieve the learning goals you set/identified earlier.

In that case, make sure that you give your students plenty of time to write notes for your lessons so they can study them and answer you promptly and accurately come test day. Do you have a final exam surrounding a few modules from a book or from an online class? Make sure that the exam has a section for each module so students can study the entire course’s material from start to finish. However, the backward design approach provides an authentic learning experience relevant for both the educator and the student when deployed effectively. Critics of backward design express concerns around a potential lack of flexibility in programming. Teachers may fear “teaching to the test” and not enabling authentic learning.

Evolution Over Time

backwards design

In other words, a superior education will teach students to think and practice like scientists. If we don’t plan learning experiences that make that possible, we’re giving them a sub-par education. Notice that in this approach, the assessment is created after the lessons are planned. Sometimes it isn’t created until most of those lessons have already taken place. The assessment is kind of an afterthought, a check to see if students were paying attention to the stuff we taught them. Developed by Maria Montessori in the early 20th century, this method emphasizes student-directed learning in multi-age classrooms.

Assessments

Backward Design serves as more than just a tool for curriculum planning; it represents a shift in how we think about education. Instead of starting with what educators want to do, it starts with what students need to learn. This learner-centered focus makes it a powerful approach for modern education, where student engagement and outcomes are increasingly emphasized. In this model, traditional classroom activities and homework assignments are reversed. Teachers like Aaron Sams and Jonathan Bergmann have popularized this approach, which often involves students watching lectures at home and engaging in activities during class. While the Flipped Classroom also aims for active learning and engagement, it doesn’t necessarily start with specific outcomes in mind, making it different from Backward Design in its initial focus.

Academic standards usually provide the best direction for educational goals. For example, according to the Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice, students should be able to understand the concept of ratios by the end of sixth grade. It is the teacher’s job to determine, via backward lesson design, how their students will reach the necessary level of proficiency. If it turns out that those favorite lessons don’t really align with any standards, you might be able to revise them so they do.

Popularized by education reformers like John Dewey, Project-Based Learning focuses on complex questions or challenges that require students to engage in critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration. While PBL and Backward Design both stress the importance of real-world applications, they differ in structure. PBL is generally more open-ended and may not align neatly with specific learning objectives. When students are aware of the learning objectives from the start, as they are in a Backward Design framework, they are likely to be more motivated to achieve those objectives. Knowing what the end goal is, just like knowing what the treasure is at the end of a hunt, can make the educational journey more motivating and fulfilling.

These random activities are taking up precious time that could be spent on much more valuable stuff. I mean, even though I loved the book, my students’ response to it was mostly lukewarm. Maybe it was the connections I was able to make to the stuff students dealt with on a day-to-day basis.

The teacher has created an authentic task in which students will design a 3-day meal plan for a camp that uses food pyramid guidelines. One criticism of this approach is that is appears to promote “teaching to the test”. Yet despite the negative connotation that comes along with that phrase, arguable teaching to the test is exactly what the role of the instructor should be. But if a known final test or assessment is required, then backward design can be a useful way to prepare learners to perform well on the final assessment.

The inner circle identifies enduring understandings or big ideas that students should retain after they have forgotten many of the details (Wiggins and McTighe 1998, 9-10). With this detailed set of ILOs, we see exactly how the three general ILOs in the first section will be measured. Relatively immeasurable outcomes (e.g., “Gain an appreciation…”) are analyzed into the homework and exam tasks through which students can show that they have gained such an appreciation. This second set of ILOs also provides much more detail, specificity, and measurability. In contrast, the 3 general ILOs help students understand the course’s scope and aim in a more digestible way. When you set goals upfront,  you may base them on assumptions about student potential.

For this reason, backward design is considered a much more intentional approach to course design than traditional methods of design. Traditionally, instructors have applied a forward or content-centered approach to designing lessons, modules, or courses. This approach typically ends with crafting learning objectives to connect the content learned to the assessments. Backward design in education is a lesson planning strategy that starts with the final assessment, then asks teachers to build their lessons toward that goal. This differs from transitional lesson design, in which teachers identify content they need to cover, build relevant lessons, then create the final assessment. Backward lesson design encourages teachers to be more intentional about their lesson plans and ensures that they make the best use of class time.

In particular, beware of words like “understand” or “know.” Exactly what it means to “understand” or “know” something is open to interpretation. An undergraduate’s level of “understanding” of a topic and that of the instructor will vary wildly, and it will be difficult for students to know which level of understanding they should be aiming for. When developing ILOs, ask yourself how you will know that a student “understands” the material – what will they need to do, or say to demonstrate their understanding? Your answer to this question should provide you with more specific (and measurable ILOs.

Arizona House expels Republican Rep Liz Harris for ethics violation

Steele is precinct committee member for the district who was among the signers of a March 28 resolution by GOP district officials in support of Harris for "her commitment to Election Integrity, and her efforts to expose corruption on whichever side of the aisle it falls." Department of Justice’s civil rights division, which warned about potential voter intimidation. On Tuesday, the House Ethics Committee determined that Ms. Harris had violated legislative rules by inviting a witness to present false testimony. In addition to the bribery accusation, the witness also claimed the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints had control over state agencies.

Support

A bipartisan, two-thirds majority of the GOP-led House voted Wednesday to kick out Liz Harris, a freshman lawmaker from Chandler, a suburb of Phoenix. House Democrats said the report validated their previous attempt to censure Harris — a maneuver that was sidestepped by House Republicans, who said at the time it was premature pending an ethics investigation. “What the House Rules cannot tolerate is a member engaged in the conduct described above, which erodes public trust in the legislative process,” according to the report, which was unanimously signed by the three Republicans and two Democrats on the panel. "It will be perceived as setting the precedent that if you rock the boat too much, you will be expelled," said Kolodin, who voted against expulsion. Ethics Chairman Rep. Joe Chaplik, R-Scottsdale, led the investigation and report conducted for Harris.

Don Shooter, who was found to have serially sexually harassed his colleagues and lobbyists at the state Capitol. In full, the ethics panel concluded Harris’ actions violated House Rules and damaged the body’s institutional integrity. That was problematic enough to merit the ethics investigation and expulsion, according to House Speaker Ben Toma — a Republican, and one of the lawmakers falsely accused of criminal activity. But a video of her testimony exploded on the internet in the days following the hearing. A bipartisan, two-thirds majority of the House voted Wednesday to kick out Harris, an election-denying freshman lawmaker from Chandler, a suburb of Phoenix.

How Wild Accusations Tore The Arizona GOP Apart

Election deniers have zeroed in on Arizona’s most populous county, Maricopa, where Election Day glitches last fall disrupted some ballot counting. An independent report released on Monday found that heavy paper and longer ballots contributed to those problems. The desk used by Arizona Republican Rep. Liz Harris at the state Capitol in Phoenix stands empty moments after she was expelled from the Legislature on Wednesday. Since making the statement, Harris has voted on 100 bills, despite the 2022 election never being redone.

Republicans in the Arizona House of Representatives are down one member following the expulsion of Rep. Liz Harris, R-Chandler, in a vote by her colleagues. Harris’s Republican colleagues were split on the expulsion vote, with some saying she clearly crossed a line and others saying expulsion went too far despite her lack of judgment on the issue. The expulsion resolution said that Harris “undermined the public’s confidence in this institution and violated the order and decorum necessary to complete the people’s work in the state of Arizona”. The ethics panel stopped short of recommending a specific punishment for Ms. Harris by the House, in which fellow election deniers have wielded significant power and orchestrated a partisan review of the 2020 election results in Arizona.

Breger’s testimony in March was fiery, directly (and falsely) alleging that dozens of public servants were on the take.

In one of the text messages, Breger told Harris she was “trying to think of something that won’t raise a red flag” when naming her presentation, a sign that Harris knew of the extreme allegations the presenter would bring up.

The fact that they were presented before Republican lawmakers in their official capacity at the state Capitol — Democrats on the committees boycotted the hearing — gave the accusations enough credibility to spread. Gilbert insurance agent Jacqueline Breger also claimed during the February hearing that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints “controls” the government and played a key role in money laundering schemes. Before she was elected to the Legislature, Harris led a door-to-door canvassing effort searching for proof of fraud following the 2020 presidential election.

The woman, Gilbert, Ariz., insurance agent Jacqueline Breger, also claimed during the February hearing that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints "controls" the government and played a key role in money laundering schemes. "In my discussions with Ms. Harris, she firmly believes her removal was improper and unlawful," said Supervisor Jack Sellers, who represents an area that includes the legislative district. "This board was not a party to that process but must give weight to an action that over two-thirds of the House members voted in favor of." Rep. Liz Harris was found to have violated House rules by inviting a witness to present false charges about lawmakers and other state officials to a legislative committee.

Breger, an insurance agent from Scottsdale, attributed her allegations to a report written by John Thaler, who she said was an attorney with a background in fraud investigations. The full chamber vote came a day after the House Ethics Committee released a report that said Harris damaged “the integrity of the House” through her actions. Legislative District 13 precinct committee members nominated Liz Harris, Julie Willoughby and Steve Steele in two rounds of voting at their meeting April 17. But she likely would have little chance of winning the approval of the supervisors and Sellers, a harsh critic of the state Senate's partisan audit of the 2020 election who called the effort in 2021 an "adventure in never-never land."

Among other things, she alleged that “the City of Mesa is a racketeering organization” and that nonexistent “phantoms” were employed as attorneys and election officials. PHOENIX (AP) — Republican lawmaker Liz Harris who was previously expelled will not be sent back to the Arizona House of Representatives, Maricopa County officials announced Friday. All Democrats and most Republicans voted to expel Harris, getting the necessary two-thirds of the House to pass the resolution. PHOENIX - The Arizona House has voted to expel Republican state lawmaker Liz Harris.

Arizona’s Republican-controlled House of Representatives took the rare step on Wednesday of expelling a G.O.P. lawmaker who earlier this year had arranged testimony from a conspiracy theorist falsely accusing top state officials of bribery and other misconduct. "Harris engaged in disorderly behavior in violation of House Rule 1, thereby eroding the public trust in the legislative process," the resolution calling for her expulsion read. "Each member could make up their own mind on whether or not Rep. Harris did, in fact, not only perpetrate this to begin with, but then contradict herself numerous times during the ethics hearing process," said Toma, one of the 46 lawmakers who voted to expel Harris. A prominent supporter of discredited election conspiracies, she was also found by the House Ethics Committee to have engaged in "disorderly behavior" in violation of the chamber’s rules. Arizona Republican Liz Harris was expelled from the state House of Representatives for inviting a witness to present false charges about lawmakers and other state officials — and then lying about her involvement in the outrageous testimony.
